Welcome to Harmar Township

Located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Harmar Township is a friendly community with small-town charm. The Township is home to many attractions, including the Allegheny Islands State Park and C.W. Bill Young Lock and Dam in the Allegheny River. Harmar Township is also home to a pair of Bald Eagles who have nested on the steep hillside above Route 28.

Harmar Township is nestled in along the Allegheny River and shares land borders with six municipalities (Cheswick Borough, Frazer Township, Fox Chapel Borough, O'Hara Township, Indiana Township, Springdale Township). Harmar Township also shares water borders with Oakmont Borough and Plum Borough, with the former sharing the Hulton Bridge.

Per the United States Census Bureau, Harmar Township is home to approximately 2,921 residents and is made up of a total of 6.4 square miles (~6.0 square miles of which is land). Harmar Township is currently made up of six small neighborhoods: Harmarville, Acmetonia, Harmar Heights, Forest Manor, Forest Highlands, and Chapel Downs.

Harmar Townships’ roots stem from the unincorporated community of Harmarville, which was originally founded in 1875 by Harmar Denny, a United States Congressman (1829-1837) and the son of Pittsburgh’s First Mayor, Ebenezer Denny. Before becoming a United States Congressman, Harmar Denny also served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1824-1829.
